Scarborough Street Race
After the success of Edinburgh Street race last year, this year we moved venues to Scarborough. It was my first ever visit to Scarborough so I was quite looking forward to a trip to the seaside ! Unfortunately the weather was not going to let us witness Scarborough at it’s best and the rain and wind were on and off all day. The wind was blowing straight off the sea and it was freezing ! After a few delays practice got underway and proved to be pretty good fun. It started in the castle and the first 100metres was flat out down the cobbles, then straight into a long flight of stairs and then into a couple of man made jumps, which were pretty sketchy in the wind. A flat out tarmac straight left me out of gears and then straight up a stepped grassy bank that got really slippery as the day progressed. A couple of hairpin turns and then the final stairs into the last drop onto the final roundabout and sprint down the pier. It took all of 1.20min and it was all over.
Seeding took place just before it got dark, but it was already getting pretty hard to see ! Racing began, again a little delayed and after a couple of accidents the racing was cancelled as it was getting really late and the weather just got worse. So for the Seniors and Elites the results went off the seeding run, which worked out nicely in my favour as I won the seeding run ahead of Helen Gaskell and Katy Curd.
Considering the weather there was still a big crowd all day and I think that this format of racing is really great at taking our sport to the people and I hope that we have better luck with the weather for next year’s race !
