News ImageVigo Bike Contest – Vigo, Spain

Vigo has been a stop on the world cup circuit and for the last few years a round of the Maxxis cup series. This year it was an independent event, with full UCI points and good prize money. I had been looking forward to this race since Christmas as its right by the beach, great track and always lovely and sunny. I just couldn’t wait to ride my bike in the dry and be warm at the same time !!
So as I was packing my bags, I thought I should just check the forecast to see if I needed my flip flops and sun tan lotion !! Well what I saw was a need to pack my wellies !! Rain all weekend....no way, I was gutted.

So after leaving the UK at the crack of dawn with no rain I arrived into Vigo to be greeted with the first rain they had seen in more than a month !! Sadly for once the forecast was correct and for practice on Fri and Sat it rained, however with this soil here it doesn’t get too bad and the track was still pretty good fun to ride, you and your bike were just covered in mud !! I had a brand new bike and brand new white kit that really got a christening in these conditions, my kit never to be white again !

We had a seeding run on Saturday afternoon and by this time the rain had stopped but the fog was pretty thickNews Image at the top, making conditions pretty tough to see very far ahead. I made some big mistakes at the top losing quite a bit of speed and I also caught one of the girls in front of me, so I knew my time of 3.18 could be a lot faster tomorrow. It was still good enough to take 1st place.
Sunday was race day and the weather finally looked to be improving and it was a dry start to the day. The race runs were all done by lunchtime and throughout the morning the track dried up slowly. I still stayed on mud tyres and this time there was no fog, so conditions at the start were much better. I put together a much better run with no major mistakes and finished in a time of 3.08. It was good enough to take the win with young British rider Manon Carpenter taking 2nd ahead of the rest of the local Spanish riders. The sun then came out just as we were packing up just to give me an hour or two of the lovely heat we could have had !! However I was soon back to the UK and back to the rain, quickly forgetting that there is a sun out there somewhere !!

Next stop Pearce Cyces first race of the summer at Bringewood, Ludlow.
